If you want a record to check out later, just download the cheat sheet that summarises the steps for you.
  1. SET A CAREER GOAL

Gym Instructor, Group Exercise Instructor and Personal Trainer are all roles you can perform in the fitness industry. Pick one that you think is a fit for you. There is no right or wrong answer – just what works for you.   A Group Exercise Instructor can deliver freestyle, pre-choreographed or circuit style exercise sessions designed for participation by a group of clients with a mix of ages and fitness levels. A Gym Instructor can provide client assessments, technique correction, handle various customer enquiries and develop and demonstrate programs.   A Personal Trainer opens up plenty of career options to train individuals and groups at locations of your choosing. Areas that you can gain employment include: – Health and Fitness clubs – Local gyms and community facilities – Cruise Ships – Your own PT Business
  1. PICK A QUALIFICATION

A SIS30321 Certificate III in Fitness allows you to become a Gym Instructor or Group Fitness Instructor. A SIS40221 Certificate IV in Fitness allows you to become a Personal Trainer. You can also bundle these qualifications together to get the full range of skills. Study should always be ongoing but you have to start somewhere!
  1. GET EXPERIENCE

Work experience allows you to confirm your career choice, helps with your qualification and sets you up for employment. Work with other professionals and continue to learn. Find out what you do and don’t like doing in the fitness industry. Make sure you develop the skills required to complete your qualification. These are all great reasons to get experience – along with meeting new people.
  1. LEARN NUTRITION

Being a best-practice fitness professional means learning nutrition. Just exercising yourself and your clients is short-changing the benefits from having a healthy and active lifestyle. There are heaps of ways to learn nutrition from research through to dedicated courses. Good nutrition is the fuel for your own fitness and that of your trainees.
  1. BECOME A FITNESS PRO

Being a fitness pro means continuously improving. Through experience, learning from clients and other fitness professionals, and further study. There is no secret formula other than to leverage every opportunity to improve yourself as a fitness professional.
